A few years after the civil war, Lenin died of a stroke. After his death, a man named Joseph Stalin rose to power. Stalin came from a poor family, and was bullied a lot as he grew up. One of the ways a totalitarian country keeps power is unquestioning obedience to the leader. When a leader tells you to do something, you cannot disobey him/her or there will be consequences. The country would stay in power through this way because the leader wouldn't have to worry about the people that he knew would be a threat to their power.
