  • It's so cold and we are starving!
  • Work harder! You have to be more skilled if you want to beat the British!
  • I'm so rich! I will give money and clothes to the colonists to help them.
  • The colonists are at Valley Forge in the winter and are staring. They have no food and are starving. They have insufficient clothing as well and the farmers aren't helping them. The soldiers are hopeless and are miserable.
  • We must retreat to New York City to give us an advantage.
  • To help his men, Washington put Baron Friedrich von Steuben in charge of the army. He helped raise their hopes and turned them into an organized fighting force.
  • Marquis de Lafayette chose to spend his own money to help the troops. He bought them clothes and praised their hard work and potential.
  • Sir Henry Clinton had already captured Philadelphia, so he ordered his army to go to New York City. The Royal Navy could keep the army supplied by sea.
  • Washington and his army chased the British while they retreated to New York CIty. The colonists caught up to the British at Monmouth, New Jersey where the battle occured. Washington was spotted everywhere cheering on his men.
  • During the night, after the British had lost the battle, the British troops slipped away along the Hudson River back to New York City. The Americans were happy with the outcome of beating the British at Monmouth.
