Storyboard Text

  • In the summer of 1780, 5,500 French troops landed in Newport, Rhode Island. They were there to help the Americans against the British.
  • General Washington tricked the British troops into thinking that they were planning to attack New York when they were really going to the south.
  • The French war ships were coming into the Chesapeake Bay which was important to Washington's plan. This forced Cornwallis to stay there without any rescue by sea.
  • On October 6th, 1781, Joseph Martin signaled for the soldiers to fire by raising the flag and it went on for days.
  • The American and French soldiers lined up across from each other while the British walked through them in surrender.
  • Rochambeau was the commander of the French forces during the American Revolution. He helped George Washington to force the surrender of British army. The French helped the Americans win this battle with against them.
