  • The Five Phases of the Fur Trade
  • Phase 1: The British and French both fished off the east coast of Canada. There, they met the Mi'kmaq people and started trading with them.

  • Phase 2: The French established New France and They traded with the First Nations around the great lakes and St. Lawrance River.

  • Phase 3: Britan set up the Hudson's Bay Company (H.B.C.). Now Britan and France were both competing in the fur trade.

  • H.B.C.!
  • Phase 4: The Northwest Company (N.W.C.) took over the french fur trade. Both the N.W.C and the H.B.C were competing and moved west where the supply of beavers was greater.
  • No! Trade with US, the HBC!
  • We are the northwest trading company!
  • We are going west! Trade with us!
  • Phase 5: Britain got the HBC and the NWC to merge into the HBC, which trded across Canada.
  • Yay!
  • We shall unite under the name, Hudson's Bay Company.
