- Assimilation occurs whenindividuals/groups of differing cultural heritage take onthe dominantcultureof a society. They adoptthe behaviours (traits) of the dominant culture andbecome socially unrecognizablefrom other members of the society. In Guyana, many people prefer celebrating western holidays rather than observing their own religious festivals.

- Students we should all be proud of our culture! I arrived in Guyana 20 years ago. I am proud to wear Chinese clothing
- Kaftan dresses are boring. I don't like African wear at all.
- I no longer want to wear saris. I want to dress in jeans and graphic t-shirts
- Acculturation is the transfer of customs from one cultural group to another. In Guyana, people wear clothes that are westernized. Amerindians, Africans, East Indians and Chinese all wear clothing that is heavily influenced by clothing worn in the United States and Europe. Dashikis, kaftans, saris, grass skirts and beaded clothing are often worn during cultural holidays.

- Cultural Erasure
- They are so lucky they can speak Spanish. I never learned my ancestral language. My ancestors were enslaved and forced to speak English.

- Cultural erasure is a practice in which a dominant culture, for example a colonizing nation,attempts to suppress, remove or erase the culture of another racialized group.Enslaved Africans were brought to plantations in Guyana where they were forced to abandon their names, religion, clothing and even the language they spoke. Today, Afro-Guyanese speak creolese/patois english.

- Grandma, why did you take my tablet and my phone away?! I don't want to talk to you! I don't want to cook or hear old-time stories. I want to view Snapchat or Instagram stories.
- My dear, it is important that you learn about your culture. I taught your mother how to cook dhal, roti and all your favourite dishes. She loved the story of Phagwah!
- Technology has affected human interactions. The overuse of cellphones, tablets, smart watches etc. has led to the loss of connections with family traditions. The widespread access to the internet has also impacted cultural practices. Rap music, hip hop and dancehall are in demand while the popularity of cultural music has declined greatly.

- Ibrahim, it was destroyed in a fire. Even the Poonai Building was demolished since 2006.
- In Georgetown we lose our historic buildings through destruction by fire.Meanwhile, the historic urban landscape of Georgetown suffers degradation by, for example, cutting down of rubber trees and other vegetation, chaotic traffic and vehicle parking, neglect of drainage, and disregard for building regulations.
