  • Hey Sarah, have you ever used Amazon?
  • Hey Kevin! I sure have. I’ve been an Amazon member for 4 years, so I do know the site pretty well. Why?
  • Well, just recently I purchased expensive shoes on their website but when I got the Amazon package it only contained a small pair of socks which I did not order.
  • Oh no! I’m so sorry that happened to you. By what you’re telling me, it sounds like you got scammed. Did the shoes have any reviews on the amazon account that was selling them?
  • Yes! However, it was only one review. The review said only great things and highly recommended I buy them.
  • Hmmm, was the account that made the review verified? How was their grammar? Did they provide any photos?
  • Oh man, I didn’t even look for any of that. I just believed their word…let me pull up the review now.
  • I don’t see any of the things you mentioned, and their grammar wasn’t the best. Does this mean it is a fake review?
  • Based on what I am seeing I personally think it is a fake review. The profile doesn’t even have a name and the purchase isn't even verified.
  • That is a big bummer. I really don’t want to make the same mistake and waste my money again. You seem to know what to look out for with these fake reviews and scams. Any advice on how to spot a fake review?
  • Definitely! A couple of major things to look out for is definitely information on the person reviewing. Check if their profile has trusting details like their name, age, how long they’ve been a member, and their average review score.
  • Seeing if any other people found the review “helpful” is also another key component. This shows how many other people trusted the review when purchasing and believed the review helped.
  • Making sure the purchase is verified is important because that proves the user actually bought the product. Check their grammar for errors and the overall review for red flags. If the review is well written and honest, then it is most likely authentic. Pictures or videos of the product can also be great evidence for it being a genuine purchase.
  • Wow! I already feel more confident in my online purchasing because of this new information. I will always be sure to look for reviews and definitely now know what to look out for when reading them. By avoiding these scams, I can save my money and make purchases that I can trust. Thank you so much Sarah!
  • No problem Kyle. These things shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially when it comes to spending your own hard-working money.
