Fortunato and Montresor run into each other at at the Carnival in Italy. Montresor offers Fortunato the chance to share some of his very expensive wine, Amontillado. Fortunato seems to be ill.
Climax
Montresor claims that Fortunato has insulted him in the past and is seeking to get his revenge tonight. The reader does not know what Fortunato has done to make Montresor this upset, but he makes sure they are aware it was unforgettable.
Falling Action
HELP!
Montresor carefully leads Fortunato down the path to the wine vault, continuously asking if he needs to turn around because of his "terrible" cough. Fortunato ignores Montresor and continues to ease his cough with wine.
My work here is done.
When they reach the spot that Montresor thought had the Amontillado in, he was astonished to see nothing but skeletons and a large hole in the wall. Montresor forces Fortunato into the hole and chains him inside with shackles. Montresor had started his revenge.
Yes! My plan is working!
Montresor begins to build a wall of bricks to block Fortunato from escaping. As Montresor begins to lay the last few bricks on the wall, Fortunato screams for help for he knows he is about to die.
Montresor leaves while hearing the sounds of Fortunato's bell on his hat jingle as he lowers his head. He had successfully completed his plan and claims no one has disturbed the tomb for the next half a century.
