This is Giuseppe Garibaldi. He is the most celebrated of Italian freedom fighters. He came from a family engaged in coastal trade and was a sailor in the merchant navy.
In 1860, Garibaldi led the famous expedition of the Thousand to South Italy. He built up an army called Red Shirts. Fresh volunteers kept joining through the course of the campaign, till their numbers grew to about30,000.
Garibaldi became the "Hero of Two Worlds" for his fighting in both Uruguay and Italy, leading his Redshirts in an invasion of Sicily in 1860 with the goal of unifying Italy under Sardinia-Piedmon
In 1867, Garibaldi led an army of volunteers to Rome to fight the last obstacle to the unification of Italy
The Redshirts won several battles against the armies of the Two Sicilies and the Papal States, and they succeeded in conquering both countries and uniting them with Italy.
The Redshirts gave inspiration to Mussolini to form the Fascist blackshirts units, and from there to Hitler's brownshirted Sturmabteilung (SA) units, as well as the quasi-fascist Irish Blueshirts under Eoin O'Duffy
