  • Hello I am Fredrick and this is my friend John! We're here to talk to you about U.S. History!
  • The Civil War has ended and there are still many problems to be solved. This set the U.S. into a period called the Reconstruction Era.
  • The new President Johnson has put in motion his plan for reconstruction. This means slavery is abolished and the 13th amendment has been passed.
  • The 13th amendment states that former slaves are now free! There is no more slavery in the United States.
  • But the United States has not passed the 14th and 15th amendments yet.
  • They haven't passed the amendments because the South has come out with the Black Codes.
  • The Black Codes created a system in which African Americans were able to be bound to white plantation owners and be forced to work without pay.
  • Northerners consider the Black Codes to be slavery under a new name. Managing this is making the ratification process slow down dramatically.
  • The 14th amendment would give all African Americans citizenship and create equality amongst everyone.
  • And the 15th amendment would allow all African American males to vote!
  • But some people don't like the idea of African Americans getting the right to vote before women could.
  • We can't wait for these new amendments to be ratified!
