Bruno is a curious nine year old boy growing up in Berlin during the 1930-1940's. The story of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas's viewpoint is focused around him. Bruno is the son of the Commandant and he is sheltered from what goes on around him. Bruno is also very adventurous and curious.

Gretel is Bruno's big sister. She loved to collect dolls in the beginning of the book but towards the end she throws them all away because she is older now and she thinks they are childish. Gretel does not like anything that is childish. Gretel liked lieutenant kotler but he was sent away from out-with.

Father is a high ranking German soldier who is very proud of what he does. He wants to shelter his children from the horrors of what is going on around him.

Mother always teaches her kids to be good people and look on the positive side of things. She is married to father. She is nice and shows lots of hospitality. Overall she is a great role model. She doesn't like being at the new house that is right outside of the out-with death camp.

Shmuel is Bruno's best friend when Bruno moves to out-with, Bruno finds himself forgetting about karl and daniel and martin because shmuel is his new best friend. Shmuel is jewish and is polish so he was captured by the Nazis in world war 2 and was sent to out-with along with the rest of his family

Shmuel gets very sad when his papa disappears
Pavel is a used-to-be doctor who is Jewish so now he just serves as a chef for Brunos family. Pavel helped Bruno out when he got hurt with his past medical experience. Pavel starts to get shaky and thats when he drops a glass on Kotler. Kotler then does indescribable things to him. Overall Pavel might look like a servant on the outside, but on the inside he is much different.
