Storyboard Text

  • I am learning about personal space and appropriate touch. This is to keep myself and others safe.
  • Yes, that's OK with me.
  • No right now but I will shake your hand instead.
  • Can I hug you?
  • Personal space is the circle of invisible space around each person. Some people's personal space is larger than others.
  • I'm lost and I need help
  • It is important to check the other person's facial expressions when I approach them to see if they look uncomfortable. If they look angry, worried or confused, I must keep back and give them lots of room.
  • When I arrive at school, I might feel excited to see adults and children that I know. If I know and trust them, it is OK so give them a short hug around the waist or shoulders, as long as I ask them first. Sometimes other people may not want a hug and I have to respect that. If I don't know the adult or child very well, I can offer them a handshake instead.
  • Outside of school: Most adults are nice and would be kind to me but some adults are not safe. If I do not know an adult, I must not try to touch them. If a strange adult asks me for my name, my school, where I live or anything personal, I must not answer. This is to keep me safe. If I am lost I must stay where lots of people can see me and try to find a police officer or staff member to help me.
  • When I get home from school I can give my family a big hug. I know when it is safe for me to hug others. I am allowed to kiss mummy and daddy or any close family but if I don't like something or if I don't want to be kissed or hugged, I am allowed to say no.
