Storyboard Text

  • “A boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse.”
  • Uh oh.
  • Hey!
  • He should've thought twice before messing with me!
  • “Picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled.”
  • Now ain't you ashamed of yourself?
  • Yes'm.
  • Ain’t you got nobody at home to tell you to wash your face?
  • “When I get through with you, sir, you are going to remember Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.”
  • I hope I don't end up in jail
  • No'm.
  • A young teen, Roger, unsuccessfully attempts to steal a powerful built woman’s purse as she walks home from work late at night on the streets of Harlem, New York a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse.
  • “I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son”
  • You thoughtI was going to say but didn't you?
  • What a silly boy!
  • The large woman, Mrs Jones, then proceeds to kick Roger in his ‘blue-jeaned sitter’ and asks the boy why his face is all dirty and he says there is no one at his house to clean it for him.
  • “Where he thought she could easily see him out of the corner of her eye, if she wanted to. He did not trust the woman not to trust him. And he did not want to be mistrusted now.”
  • I hope she can see me from the kitchen
  • This is not how I thought things were going to turn out!
  • Mrs Luela Bates Washington Jones asks him if she lets him go will he run and he says yes so she puts him in a headlock and drags him to her house and tells him that he will remember her. He will teach him right from wrong just as he was her son, and that he will get him to wash his face.
  • “But I wish you would behave yourself, son, from here on in.”
  • Good-night! Behave yourself boy!
  • Once they are in her house, she tells him to wash his face and he looks at the door, then the sink, then the door and chooses to wash his face. She asks him if he is hungry and then she tells him about how when she was younger, she did some things that she regrets so she has an understanding of why he tried to steal.
  • I-
  • Mrs Jones goes and starts to prepare dinner and he sees her purse on the daybed but decides to sit where she can see him so she can trust him even though the door was wide open and he could have left. Whilst they eat, she tells Roger about her job and she doesn’t ask any questions to embarrass him.
  • Finally, by the end, Mrs Jones tells Roger to behave himself now and gives him the ten pounds so he can go and buy the blue suede shoes that he wanted terribly. They say goodbye and he has just the time to say Thank You Ma’m before she closes the door and they part ways.
  • Thank you Ma'm.
