  • Its Okay Starr
  • Your Taillights are broken
  • Don't move Khalil !!
  • He has something in his hands !!!!!
  • NO, NO, NO!!!!!
  • I SAID DON"T MOVE !!!!!
  • In this scene officer 1-15 pulls over Khalil's car to inform him about his broken taillight. This is when he then orders 17yr Kahlil to get out the car to search him. 1-15 searched him, not once but twice. This scene is a major plot point in the book because it showed how fast the officer switched up when he saw 2 black kids in a car. This is the perfect example of how police brutality affects peoples' daily lives.
  • "Starr-Starr, you do whatever they tell you to do," he said. "Keep your hands visible. Don't make any sudden moves. Only speak when they speak to you."
  • In this scene 1-15 told both Starr and Khalil to stay still while he goes to the patrol car. That is when Khalil went to check if Starr is okay and grabs his hair brush in the process. 1-15 saw this movement and something in Khalil hands and followed the motto "shoot first ask questions later". This scene can be considered a major plot point as well because 1-15 shot at two kids, killing one without confirmation that there was a weapon present at all.
  • Khalil Lived !Khalil Lived !
  • KHALIL LIVED!! KHALIL LIVED!!
  • Khalil Lived !Khalil Lived !
  • In this scene, Khalil is dead on the ground with Starr crying over him. 1-15 does not put down his weapon but aims it at Starr. He later has other police officers telling HIM "it'll be okay" not the victim/witness Starr. This is the perfect example of police brutality because it shows how 1-15 shot a minor and continued to hold his gun up at another minor because of their skin color / his "authority".
  • “Are you serious right now?” Hailey asks. “What’s wrong with saying his life matters too?”
  • “His life always matters more!” My voice is gruff, and my throat is tight. “That’s the problem!”
  • In this scene Starr's dad is having "the talk" with her about what to do when a police officer stops her. This is a very important plot point because from a young age Starr was taught how to react WHEN the police stops her, not IF they stop her. This shows us how police brutality not only affected her daily life but also her childhood.
  • In this Scene Starr finally speaks her testimony. She explains how people only cared how Khalil died instead of the fact he lived in the first place. His life did matter. I think this was a crucial point in the book because Starr finally realized that she could make a difference and her voice would be heard.
  • Khalil Lived !Khalil Lived !
  • In this scene Starr's friend Hailey says that 1-15's life matters too. This creates an important plot point because in reality the unopposed lives will matter more. Starr is offended when her "friend" saids that because it makes it seem like 1-15 and Khalil equals which clearly they are not.
