The Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861. Taking place near Manassas, Virginia. This battle showed How much both sides needed training. One of the key figures was General Thomas Jackson.
Have y'all been slacking off? Retreat to train!
That's what I was going to say!
Blah
What have I done?
The battle of Chancellorsville had been won, but at what cost?During the battle, nervous Confederate sentries fired at what they thought to be a Union soldier. Turns out it was General Stonewall Jackson.
GENERAL JACKSON IS DEAD!
After his questionable victory in Chancellorsville, General Lee moved his army north into Pennsylvania, hoping to take the Yankees by surprise. If he succeeded then they would swing by D.C and take the capital. This however was not the case.
We'll leave tomorrow, and take Pennsylvania.
On June 30, 1863, the Union Army met with the Confederates in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The battle lasted 3 days, it is considered one of the most significant events of the Civil War. The eventual victor was the Union, for the Yankees took up strong positions on Cemetery Ridge. The Confederacy suffered heavy blows and dealt some (or at least tried to) to the line, but they could not break them.
Keep holding men!
Retreat!
Despite his losses, Lee attacked again. On July 3 he ordered General George Pickett to lead 15,000 men in a charge against the Union. This attack is known as Pickett's Charge. This plan, to no one's surprise, failed. In order to reach their target, the soldiers would have to march about 1000 yards across sloping, open ground. (A horrible decision). When the order to charge was said, the Union soldiers mowed down row after row of Confederate soldiers.
