In the beginning of the story, Charlie Gordon got picked to be in an experiment from all of Ms. Kinnian's students. "I don't know why but he says its important so they will see if they will use me. I hope they use me. Pg. 1"
But, Charlie has trouble learning and has a lack of imagination. Charlie, however, will never give up. "I didn't see nothing in the ink but he said there was pictures there other people saw. Pg 1"
When Charlie got his operation, he didn't feel smarter at first until his intellect skyrocketed and he did the test again. "Nothing is happening. I had a lot of tests and different kinds of races with Algernon. I hate that mouse. He always beats me. Pg 4"
When Algernon died, it changed everything. It changed because Algernon had the same operation as Charlie and Charlie knew that he might be next. "I put Algernon's body in a cheese box and buried him in the backyard. I cried. Pg 19"
Only a little bit after Algernon dies, Charlie starts to get the same symptoms. He starts to lose his intelligence rapidly and loses the will to even get out of bed. "I've got to fight. I lie in bed for days and I don't know who or where I am. Then it all comes back to me in a flash. Pg 19"
Charlie didn't want anyone to feel bad for him and he didn't want anyone to have know him back when he was smart. His one hope by his experience is for other dumb people to become smart like he was. “I’m going somewhere where nobody knows that Charlie Gordon was once a genius. Pg 22)
