So at my co-op placement I got to learn a lot about aerogels. Aerogels are solids that have an extremely low density, and are produced by replacing the liquid component of gels with a gas.
Aerogels are composed of silica nanoparticles that are 2-5 nanometres in diameter and there are many current applications related to aerogels.
Well.... aerogels can be used to insulate in wall framing and hard-to-insulate areas. Also, aerogels were used to insulate the Mars rovers' electrical equipment. Aerogels are also able to capture space dust from a speeding comet.
Woahhhhhh, that's so cool!!!!
I know and that's not all. Researchers are hoping to eventually use aerogels as membranes for electrochemical cells and to make structural components of aircraft.
A few minutes later...
So yea, that's what I learned from my co-op experience.
