  • In the first Persian war Rome would not be able to defeat Carthage Because of Carthage's strong sea force so Rome had to Quickly build a navy. Rome copied Carthage's ships and tried to make them even better.
  • The second Punic war
  • More than twenty years later the First Persian war ended. Rome defeated Carthage and forced the Carthaginians to leave their island and pay a huge fine. The island of Sicily was now under the control of Rome.
  • Rome takes control of the Western Mediterranean
  • After Carthage's loss against Rome, they expanded into southern Spain. Soon Carthage sent its greatest General, Hannibal to attack Rome in 218 B.C, to punish Rome for convincing the communities of Spain to rebel against Carthage. Hannibal had assembled an army of 46,000 men, many horses, and 37 elephants.
  • The third Punic war: Rome becomes the greatest power in the Mediterranean
  • On the Journey he had lost almost half of his soldiers and most of the elephants due to the brutal climate and mountain tribes in the Alps. By the time they had reached Italy Hannibal soon realized that he had been out numbered yet overpowered.
  • After the first two battles came the third and final battel of the second Persian war. The Battle of Zama. Scipio the leader of the Roman force defeated Carthage Forced them to give up Spain and had them pay another huge fine. Now Rome Rules the Western Mediterranean.
  • In 146 B.C Rome finally defeated Carthage and won the third Punic War. Although Carthage was vary difficult to raid because of the walls surrounding it the Roman army was able to get through and they burned Carthage to the ground and enslaved 50,000 men, women, and children. Carthage was no longer a military power, but it remained a trading center. Rome was now the greatest power in the Mediterranean region.
