  • Louisiana Purchase
  • Napoleon (France)
  • Here, $ 15 million
  • Okay, I'll give you all of our Louisiana territory
  • Thomas Jefferson (America)
  • April 30, 1803
  • "Indian Removal" in the Southeast
  • What?! I can't leave! This is my home! I've lived here forever, my ancestors lived here and were buried here, all the resources I use are here! How am I supposed to just move into a new land I've never been to before?!
  • 1838
  • Sorry, you have to go. I'm just carrying out orders.
  • Texas
  • YOU WILL NOT!
  • WE WULL BE INDEPENDENT!
  • Battle of the Alamo
  • 1836
  • The French didn't necessarily need the Louisiana territory, so Napoleon sold it for war money. For Americans, it meant they were beginning to fulfill their Manifest Destiny, the idea that they were destined to cover the continent from sea to sea, by doubling their country.
  • Mexican War
  • The 5 Civilized Tribes were forced to leave their homes, cultures and traditions behind for Oklahoma--a land they’d never been to before, they had to survive in this new territory with different resources and surroundings then they were used to. The Americans, meanwhile, were only concerned with stretching the US to fulfill the Manifest Destiny, and if the Natives stood in the way, they would be pushed out.
  • Oregon Territory
  • ...We just want the land up to the 49th parallel...
  • Sure I guess
  • When Texas joined the Union, that gave the United States more land to farm and possibly extend slavery--Texas would become a slave state, but that would also cause conflict about upsetting the balance between North and South. For Mexico, Texas joining the US meant strained relations with the US, especially because Mexicans refused to consider Texas independent.
  • Westward Expansion
  • Crazy Horse
  • Ghost Dance
  • Sitting Bull
  • For the Mexicans the loss of the war meant that they were in a bad place, their relationship with the US was even more strained and they were discouraged and tired from losing 1/3 of their land. For Americans, the Manifest Destiny was further fulfilled, making them believe in the idea that they were entitled to all this land even more.
  • 1846~1848
  • The Americans received more land, finally finishing the Manifest Destiny, which was a source of pride for them. Natives who already lived in those lands were disregarded, and it created tension between Natives and settlers that would eventually lead to violence and battles.
  • 1846
  • For the Natives, Westward Expansion meant the destruction of not just their homes, but also their cultures, built around the bison and surroundings the US kept killing and taking away, they were sent to reservations, which kept getting smaller and smaller. The US, on the other hand, earned glory by killing Plains American Indians and bison, believing they were doing right by claiming their "rightful" land.
  • We cannot let the white settlers take this land...! They cannot drive us away. One day, they will go, and buffalo will roam the lands again! We will be free!
  • 1870s - 1890s
