Although they did not lead a prosperous life back then, but, with both Alice and her husbands wages, they were able to live a comfortable life without having to worry about their finances.
Especially for Alice, not only was she living a comfortable life she was doing so by doing what she loved. Cooking for people had always been a joy to her. Seeing the smile on their faces after eating her food just makes her day.

Ever since Alice got unemployed, there was never a day where the family did not have to worry. This is made worse with the decrease in her husbands wages and the birth of their new child.
