- An inspector calls is set in 1912, shortly before the first world war and was written by RB Priestly. Inspector Goole arrives at the birling household, in which they are having an engagement party for Sheila and Gerald and gives the news that a young girl named Eva Smith has died from suicide by drinking disinfectant. They are all somehow involved in Eva's death even though they do not know this yet.

- Arthur Birling, the owner of Birling & Co pays his workers minimum wage. Many of the employees go on strike for better pay but have to end up returning as they are unable to provide at all for their families. Eva Smith lead this strike and keeps asking for a better pay, so Arthur Birling sacks her. Mr Birling believes that she was calling for the sack and takes no responsibility for her death.

- The inspector also shows Sheila, who is Mr Birlings daughter a picture of Eva, to which she reveals to complaining to the manager to get her fired from her new job at Milwards due to believing that she is laughing at how she looks like in a new outfit. Sheila takes responsibility for her death and is very apologetic. Eva changed her name to Daisy Renton.

- Inspector Goole also shows Gerald a photo of Eva, or as Gerald knew as Daisy Renton. He does now want to admit how he knows her but finally admits to having an affair where gives Eva/Daisy a place to say for a while and have a close intimate relationship but eventually stops it. In response Sheila hands back her engagement ring to Gerald as she knows that he cheated on her. Gerald tells Eva that he would try to win her back again. Gerald is also very apologetic for what he did.

- Eric remembers his relationship with Eva, but doesn't want to admit it. Eventually he does and realises that Eva was pregnant with his child. Eric stole money from Mr Birling in order to provide for Eva, however when Eva found out, she wanted none of the money. Eva went to Sybil Birling to get help as she work in a charity. However, Sybil doesn't believe that she is telling the truth as she says her last name is also 'Birling'. Eva then commits suicide.

- The inspector leaves. They call the local police and ask if there is a real Inspector named Goole, however there is none. They then call the hospital to see if Eva is dead, however they say there has been no suicides. Most of them are very happy however Sheila realises they still all did what they did and just because she inst dead doesn't mean it doesn't matter anymore. A few minutes go by and then they get a call from the hospital. A girl, named Eva Smith has just died and an Inspector is coming over to ask some questions.
