- Mary Anning was born in 1899 in Lyme Regis. She had a hard childhood, following being hit by lightning and the death of her sister. But she was a lively child.
- Her father died when she was only 11 and to earn money she would run errands for people in the town. She also discovered that she could make alot of money from selling things she found on the beach.
- After hiring a group of labourers she was able to discover the first complete fossil of an Ichthyosaur, which was was an ancient marine dinosaur!
- The geological society of London became very interested in it. But they didn't mention her at all. Women were not allowed to be in it and Mary was also poor and uneducated furthering the arguments against her. Lots of men tried to take credit for work she had done.
- She became extremely knowledgeable about finding fossil and marine animals. In 1823, she completed a fossil of a plesiosaurus. Some people called it fake but she was proved right and kept her good name. She was dubbed 'the princess of palaeontology'. She helped discover what dinosaurs ate and how they became fossils. Her discoveries still continue to help scientists today. Unfortunately she received little credit for the work she did during her life.
