  • WELCOME TO RHODE ISLANDRhode Island was established in 1636 by Roger Williams. It was part of the New England region.Settlers came from the Massachusetts Bay, they came for Religious freedom. Roger Williams believed that church and government should be separate. Rhode Island had Baptist church, the first Jewish Synagogue and they had the first Quaker meeting house. 
  • Rhode Island was a Charter Colony which was largely self-governed. Charter established the rules of government, but allowed the colonist a great amount of freedom within the rules. They made their living fishing, whaling, ship building, and shipping. Some parts had timber products, fur trade,maple syrup, copper,rum, beer and whiskey. They also traded slaves. They had more capita then any other New England state.
  • They had long cold winters and mild summers which made it good for growing products. They grew squash, beans, pumpkins which were important local crops. They hunted venison and turkey for meat.
  • The children had responsibilities as well. The girls would learn how to do house work and boys would help their fathers prepare for the crops or prepare for the winter.If they were lucky enough to live on a plantation or belonged to a wealthy family in the village then they would learn french or girls to needlepoint. They could also go to school.
  • May 4,1776 Rhode Island became the first state to formally declare it's independence from Great Britain
