- In 1926, Malcolm was born to Louise and Earl Little at a hospital in Omaha
- 1928, white supremists burned the Little's to the ground. This leads to the family moving two miles out from East Lansing, where Malcolm X says this is when he began to remember things and started to grow up.
- 1931, Earl Little was killed in a streetcar accident supposedly set up by the Ku Klux Klan. After his death, his family struggles to make ends meet and apply for welfare.
- At the age of 15 Malcolm X visits his half-sister, Ella Collins, in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, where he finds himself entranced with how they lived.
- Back from his trip to Boston, Malcolm is discouraged by Mr. Ostrowski, his 8-th grade English teacher, from pursuing his goal of becoming a lawyer despite Malcolm earning straight A's, because he's black.
- Malcolm X moves to Bostonin 1941 after Ella gets custody over him. Over the next few years he works a number of jobs on railroads, restaurants, bars, etc. Malcolm X also learns to dress, act, and speak like a hipster.
