This book is about Jack, his teacher, Miss Stretchberry, and a yellow dog. Jack's teacher wanted him to write a poem but Jack didn't want to. He said "Poetry is for girls:. He was confused by some of the poems they read and thought they don't make sense. They were about a red wheelbarrow, white chickens, blue cars etc.
Jack's father took him to an Animal Protection Shelter to get a dog. There were rows of cages and when Jack walked by a cage, he saw a yellow dog, panting, wagging his tail and Jack thought he was saying "Pick me, Pick me". They did and named him Sky. Jack even wrote a poem about him. One day Jack and his friends were playing ball outside and Sky ran in the street for the ball and a car hit him. He died. So sad.
Jack read a poem, "Love That Boy" by Walter D. Myers and he really liked it. He expressed his feelings to his teacher and she suggested Jack write a letter to him. Jack didn't want to figuring he'd be too busy to even read it let alone respond. He decided to try and to his surprise Mr. Myers agreed to come. In leaving Jack gave Mr. Myers an envelope with a note and poem saying you are an inspiration to me.
