Elie and his family are told that they are to be transported to the ghettos. They pack some things for the way there and tell the neighbors.
"Get up, sir, get up! You must ready yourself for the journey." (Wiesel 15)
All of the Jews are on this train car and are being told that they are property of the German Army. They had to hand over all gold and jewelry to the SS officers for the Army and had to stay in the car unless they were sick.

All of the Jews were separated by men and women. They were forced to leave all belongings behind.
Elie is told to go wake the neighbors to get ready. He wakes the head of the household of his fathers friend.
In this scene Madame Schachter kept on seeing fires that were hallucination. "Jews, look! Look at the fire! Look at the flames!" (Wiesel 28).
Elie tells a prisoner that he is 15 and his father is 50. The prisoner responds telling them to lie about their age and say that he is 18 and his father is 40.
