  • Rising Action/Verbal Irony
  • My dear Fortunato you do not sound well, we must get you some rest
  • Nonsense, I am completely well
  • Rising Action/Verbal Irony
  • I drink to the buried around us.
  • Let me at least offer you some Medoc.
  • And I to your long life.
  • Rising Action/Dramatic Irony
  • Just there.
  • Sure, I could use a minuet to calm myself but I will not stop for anything. I must see and taste this Amontillado. Whether Montresor wants to admit it or not, he truly needs me down here to ensure that he did not get fooled of his precious money.
  • Climax
  • I realize that this is a dead end. My body is pushed against the wall. Chains are thrown around my waist and arms. I unable to understand what it happening right now.
  • Montresor cracks open the bottle, taking only a small sip before passing the bottle over. I take the bottle and drown half, to help with my cough. He takes ahold of my arm, touches my chest, and we proceed toward the cask.
  • Falling Action/External Conflict (character vs. character)
  • I think to myself that this must be some sort of joke of initiation ritual to taste the wine. Montresor has not stopped working and only has a few layers before I am entrapped.
  • Along the way he drops my arm and travels ahead, leaving me to walk behind slowly. I swear I hear Montresor say something about death, but then again I did just finish that second bottle of wine. My head throbs even more know, and I still have a stifling cough as I realize that we have been traveling for a long while.
  • Resolution/Situational Irony/Theme/Symbolism
  • For the love of God, Montresor
  • He offers me another bottle as we make journey forward. Montresor leads me deeper into the catacombs, past through low arches and more darkness. ---I follow his directions, but don't get too far before..
  • Go it's in there, have a look.
  • Montresor makes no effort to reply, and busies himself behind me. I hurt more than ever and wish to be in bed, I moan for help and begin crying out in pain. At this, Montresor has already started building a wall around me. I suddenly stop and realize what is happening. I shake the chains with all my might. The work behind me does not stop, I know that there is nothing left to do and throw my head back in a throaty laugh.
  • AHHAHAHHHHAHAH
  • AMONTILLADO!!
  • ---As Montresor is placing the last stone on, he pauses, looks at my miserable state, offers me a small sad smile. He then quietly whispers, "Till death do you part, she will love me more". He placed the last stone in place leaving me to my painful death.
  • The Amontillado!!
  • The Amontillado!!
  • I have her ring, she is mine now.
  • Ha-ha, yes the Amontillado, but is it not getting late. Surely, Bellezza has already gone to rest.
  • As I was awaiting my death, I knew that day an important lesson was learned, sadly my last. We can not trust everyone, even if they seem like you dearest friend. You know how the saying goes, keep you friends close and your enemies closer.
