The food starts off by being ingested through the mouth where the teeth mechanically digest the food while the saliva produced by the salivary gland chemically digests the food.
After the mouth the food travels down the esophagus by involuntary muscle movements called peristalsis. After that the food travels down into the stomach which chemically digests the food with acid and it mechanically digests the food by churning it. After this it travels down through the small intestine and then it goes down the large intestine where the nutrients are put into the bloodstream.
Finally after the large intestine it goes down to the rectum where it is held for a short amount of time until it exits through the anus.
