  • Indus River
  • Welcome to the Indus River Valley in India and modern day Pakistan!
  • 2500–1700 bce
  • Wealthy families in the Indus River Valley lived in comfortable houses with courtyards. On every home there was a flat roof with stairs leading up to the roof. The roof was used for extra space to work and relax. Although there was not much furniture in these homes there were wells and toilets in the houses.
  • The Indus River Valley had cities with complex water and sewage systems. The waste traveled from the flushed toilet into the river or sea. Each house had flowing water that was linked with drains covered with burnt clay bricks. The rest of the water removed human wastes.
  • This is the great bath. In the Indus River Valley cleansing was a big part of rituals. They built Mohenjo Daro known as the Great Bath around 2500 BCE. The Great Bath was used for special religious functions where the water was used to purify and renew the well being of the bathers.
  • Seals were used to make sealing. Sealings were used in ancient times for trade. They would be made on ceramics or the clay tags used to seal the rope around bundles of goods. All the seals have pictures of animals with something written in a pictographic script
  • We used trade in our everyday lives. Some goods that we traded included terracotta pots, beads, gold, silver, colored gems like turquoise and lapis lazuli, metals, flints, seashells and pearls. We traded with many different civilizations like Persia, Mesopotamia and China.
