- Before the civil war, the African-Americans were forced to perform high and intensive labor which included them to work on large cotton plantations while, others worked in other types of agriculture which included the growth of tobacco, hemp, corn etc. and mostly were treated as slaves.

- during the civil war, The African-Americans were served in the infantry and the military and for the Union side, they were utilized as spies and scouts to the Union army and were often assigned to non-combat duties and served in relief roles also. for eg) Working as nurses, cooks etc.

- During the civil war few of the slaves escaped to their slave owners or to the north states for their freedom. There they got more respect and also they got a good income to keep themselves and their family alive.

- The thirteenth amendment of America also known as the emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln in 1862 issued it. It stated that it formally abolished slavery.

First, they passed the Thirteenth Amendment which officially ended slavery.
