The Merchant of Venice - Plot Overview
Storyboard Text
- Portia and Bassanio are in love with each other but they cannot be together unless Portia's Father allows him to court her by selecting the correct casket.
- Bassanio asks his friend Antonio if he can borrow some money to present to Portia's father. Antonio says that he cannot but he knows someone called Shylock, who could lend him some in exchange for his flesh if he cannot repay him.
- Bassanio presents the money to Portia's father and selects the correct casket made from lead. They get married and live happily together.
- Later they find out that Antonio is in danger overseas and needs their help. Portia comes up with an idea that her and her friend Nerissa can dress as a male lawyer and argue for Antonio's release from Shylock's contract.
- They save Antonio with witty holes in the contract and take him back to Venice. Bassanio and Nerissa's husband both decide to stop being married to their wives as they do not see through their disguises.
- Portia and Nerissa both reveal themselves and save their marriages. They arrive home safely and become extremely rich from the previously loaned money, that they live happily ever after.
