Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States of America. He opposed the expansion of slavery. He led the Union during the Civil War as a member of the republican party. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865.
Ulysses S. Grant was one of the most important leaders of the Union in the Civil War. He then went on to serve as the 18th president of the United States of America. As president, he worked with Republicans to protect African Americans during reconstruction. He also put the country's Justice department in place.
The Union's military strategy was known as the Anaconda plan. It was suggested by Winfield Scott "to slowly choke and suffocate the south". The plan would impose a blockade to halt southern trade with the world. Meanwhile, the army would divide and isolate sections of the South and capture its vital cities and the capital of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia.
The North experienced an economic boom because of their factories. Their industries supplied soldiers with uniforms, ammunition, and whatever necessities they might have needed.
Many African Americans enlisted into the Union military. About 180,000 African Americans served in the Union army. ANother 10,000-15,000 served in the Union navy. In the confederate army, African Americans were not allowed to fight in the war. This meant the Union already had more numbers which put them at an advantage.
Since the Union needs to win the war, they were under absolute pressure during that time. If they lost the war, they would have compromised democracy and would have split the country. In fact, they went into a lot of stress-related incidents during the war.
