  • The audience told by the narrator his desire to kill the other main character, the old man, because of his eye. The story mainly takes place at night. The killer/narrator lives in the old man's house.
  • Falling Action
  • The narrator starts to watch the old man sleep and plans to kill him, however he cannot summon the anger to do so as the old man's eye is closed. He does this for 7 nights. However, on the 8th night, the eye is open.
  • Resolution

  • The narrator kills the old man and hides him beneath the floor boards.
  • The old man's scream has been heard by a neighbour, so the police have been called. The narrator takes the police to the room where the body is under the floor calmly. The narrator is confident that the police will not find the body or know that someone has been killed.
  • The narrator keeps hearing the old man's heart beat, even though he is long dead. The continuous heartbeat starts to drive the narrator even more insane, until he finally confesses to the crime. The heart represents the killers guilt.
