In today's discussion we look at treating an individual with a gambling problem . We have the lovely Dr. Rogers, a psychoanalytic psychologist, Dr.Watson , a behavioral psychologist ;Dr Ellis, a cognitive psychologist and Dr. Smith a biological psychologist
Slide: 2
Thanks ! for having us Kate
Thanks for joining us guys, My name is Kate , I'm ready to kick of this meeting. Let's start with you Dr. Rogers
Slide: 3
So for treatments Kate, I would suggest psychoanalysis to explore the unconscious motivations. Through techniques like free association and dream analysis , we can uncover the and address the root cause of the gambling behavior
Wow ! that's very insightful Dr. Rogers thanks for sharing your perspective and treamnets . Now we move on to Dr. Watson
Slide: 4
Well , Kate I believe the patient's gambling problem may stem from unresolved conflicts and unmet needs from his childhood
Lets start with you Dr. Rogers . What's your perspective of the patient's problem ?, and suggest potential treatment or remedies .
Slide: 5
Thank you so much Dr. Watson for your insights I can honestly say that I've learnt something . Now we'll move over to Dr. Ellis , I'm excited to hear your perspective of the patient's problem
Exactly ! Kate Now in terms of treatments , I would implement a behavior modification plan. this could include techniques like positive reinforcement for non - gambling activities . Additionally we can use desensitization to reduce the excitement that comes with gambling
Slide: 6
I believe the patient's gambling problem Kate, is likely a result of operant conditioning. So in other words the patient has learned to associate gambling with positive reinforcement, such as the thrill that comes with winning
Oh ! Okay So it's like the Social aspect of winning ?
Slide: 7
You're absolutely correct! Kate I can see that you've done some research . Now I believe ,that the patient's gambling problem is due to cognitive distortions . Our brains process alot of information daily so as a result , it seeks a shortcut to decrease mental breakdown.
Hello ! Dr Ellis , as mentioned I'm excited to hear your perspective as you would focus and the patient's thoughts and beliefs correct ?
Slide: 8
So in this case gambling is the shortcut for the patient as he believes that gambling is a way to solve financial problems . Now, for treatments we can could develop coping strategies to deal with urges to gamble.
Very ! interesting thanks for your input Dr. Ellis We now have Dr. Smith
Slide: 9
Hi Kate , I was getting a bit nervous there
Ha ! Ha! no need just try to relax . So let's hear your perspective of the problem .
Slide: 10
Being as that is the case, I'd strongly suggest Pharmacotherapy, and medications that regulate dopamine levels might help reduce the compulsion to gamble . In addition, to that the patient can explore lifestyle changes that support brain and health.
Once again thanks for sharing your perspectives and treatments.
Slide: 11
Now we must consider Kate , that there may be a genetic predisposition to addictive behaviors,or an imbalance in nuerotransmitters like dopamine that akes gamblingparticularly rewarding
Dr.Smith , what treatments would you suggest to address underlying neurological issues?
Slide: 12
The meeting concludes with a collaborative approach , integrating each psychologist insights into a comprehensive treatment plan.
It's been a while since I saw you let's catch up !
Slide: 13
Dr.Smith I really like what you said earlier. Can we discuss this further over dinner
