  • Mountain men were some of the first Americans to settle in Oregon. They worked as fur trappers mainly hunting beavers for their pelts, they made good profits selling their fur. They died off in 1830 due to over-trapping.
  • Mexican-American War
  • This will show them not to take Texas away from us
  • An expedition led by pioneers in hopes of a better life, they traveled 2,000 miles west in a wooden wagon 15 miles a day in order to beat the snow. Life on the trail was hard, terrain was rough, weather was harsh and disease spread quickly.
  • Mormons in Utah
  • And we will find new sanctuary, in Utah!
  • Manifest Destiny was the idea that the United States is destined by God to spread democracy across North America. This led many Americans to believe they were superior to Native Americans and Mexicans, "justifying" them taking their land.
  • California Gold Rush
  • I'm gonna get so rich off of this
  • After the US annexed Texas Mexico was furious, they still saw Texas as a part of Mexico even though it was now an independent country. Eventually the war ended and America got California and New Mexico for $10 million and an agreement to respect Spanish speaking citizens.
  • Joseph Smith founded a church teaching those of his faith, the Mormons were chased out of state after state and eventually Smith was killed by an angry mob and Brigham Young took over. Young would later find them refuge in a secluded part of Utah.
  • In 1848 John Sutter finds gold in Northern California; word spreads to San Francisco and suddenly thousands of people are traveling to get a chance at wealth. Most did not get rich but thousands of homes were established causing California to gain statehood in 1850.
