Douglass is in the cornfield using the tall stalks to conceal himself from Mr. Covey, who is looking for Douglass so he can whip him. Douglass had just returned from running away to his master's house to seek help, and bolted into the corn field when he saw Covey running in his direction with a whip in hand.
I hope he doesn't find me...
WHERE ARE YOU, FREDERICK?!
Douglass decides to fight back when Covey attacks Douglass while he is tending to the horses in the barn. This catches Covey off guard, and he becomes scared. Frantically, Covey calls out for help to others that may hear him, but the fight between them continues.
HELP!!
I am going to fight back this time. I can't let Covey do this to me,
Douglass has won the fight between him and Mr. Covey which regained his lost spirit and inspiration. He decides that even though he can't be free, he will never let another man physically hurt him again.
Even if I remain a slave for the rest of my life, I will never let another man lay as much as a finger upon me.
