Hello stranger, this is my castle and this is my wife. The Green Chapel is near and you can stay here until you're ready to go. Whatever you receive you will give to me also.
Sir Gawain Meets Lord and Wife
Hello and welcome to our home.
Sir Gawain Gets the Girdle
Here is a magic green girdle. This will protect your life and keep you alive after your head is chopped off.
Sir Gawain Goes to Green Chapel
This place is hideous. Do people worship the Devil here?! Is anyone even here? This Chapel was a trick!
You're a good man for keeping your promise. Now we must not delay and do what we both came here for.
Sir Gawain is welcomed into the Lord's castle until he is ready to go to the Green Chapel. He is welcomed in by the Lord and his wife. The Lord makes a promise with Sir Gawain that whatever Gawain receives, he will give to the Lord also.
Sir Gawain Flinches
You're not a real knight. A real knight doesn't flinch in the face of the enemy. When you struck me, I didn't move.
The wife gives Sir Gawain a magic green girdle. It will protect him and keep him alive after his head is chopped. He decides to keep the green girdle for himself.
Green Knight Goes for Another Blow
I owed you a hit and I did it with no harm. You have failed this test. You payed back the kisses, but not the green girdle my wife gave. I am the Lord of the castle you slept in.
Sir Gawain wears the green girdle and goes to the Green Chapel. The place is hideous and Gawain thinks people worship the devil there. He believes the Chapel is a trick. The Green Knight comes out with his ax praising Gawain and prepares for the blow.
Sir Gawain Feels Guilty.
Here is my falsehood! I am guilty and I'm disloyal and a liar. I beg that you forgive me.
You are forgiven and free of guilt. I give you this girdle as a reminder of what happened here. Let's feast!
Sir Gawain flinches at being struck. The Green Knight is angry and tells him he's not a real knight. He says he isn't because a real knight doesn't flinch in the face of the enemy. Sir Gawain tells him to strike again.
Strike once more.
I'm tired of your threats. Strike me and deliver me what I came here for and my destiny.
The Green Knight goes for a third strike and Sir Gawain doesn't flinch. Sir Gawain is upset with the threats. He is then only nipped with the ax with a little blood. He passed without fear, but failed for not paying back with the green girdle like he promised.
Sir Gawain admits that he wore the girdle and now feels guilty and asks for forgiveness. He is forgiven by the knight, but keeps the girdle as a reminder. The Green knight then says Let's Feast!
