Storyboard Text

  • Good morning students, today we are going to learn how to use the outlier formula.
  • hmm that sounds hard.
  • Let's first look at the equations on the board and try the first question:A set of data has the lower quartile 25 and the upper quartile 50. Find the range of values for which data would be flagged as outliers.
  • First condition: x < Q1 - 1.5 (Q3 -Q1)Second condition: x > Q3 +1.5 (Q3 -Q1)
  • I think I understand, the lower quartile is Q1 and upper quartile is Q3.
  • First condition: x < 25 - 1.5 (50 -25)Second condition: x > 50 +1.5 (50 -25)
  • YES! we would just plug the numbers into the formulas.
  • First condition: x < 25 - 1.5 (50-25)x < 25 - 1.5 (25)x< 25 - 37.5x < -12.5
  • Exactly, let us start with the first one.
  • And now we would solve right?
  • Second condition: x > 50 + 1.5 (50 -25)x > 50 + 1.5 (25)x > 50 + 37.5 x > 87.5
  • now lets do the second one.
  • x < -12.5x > 87.5
  • Does anyone know what tis means?
  • Great Job! Does everyone understand?
  • Yes, if a number is less than -12.5 it is an outlier and if a number is greater than 87.5 it is an outlier.
  • Yes, I do. It is not as hard as I thought it would be.
