JERUSALEM!?! That's were Jesus' tomb is. Of course.
Will you help us take back Jerusalem?
You've failed to gain our respect.
Please, please, please, help us.
Pope Urban II calls for a crusade to take back Jerusalem.
Lets end this Crusade.
In 1071 Seljuk Turks take over Jerusalem. the emperor of the Byzantine Empire asks the Pope for help, the Pope agrees because that's where Jesus' tomb is. The first crusade was a crusade because they took the Muslim Kingdom by surprise.
Hahaha how you like that!
The Pope calls for the second crusade because in 1144 the Muslims attack and conquer Edessa (a Christian state), so the Christians tried to get the Muslims to help them defend Jerusalem, but the Christians failed to treat the Muslims with respect and the Christians were cruel to the Muslims, therefore they were unable to gain the Muslims support.
The third crusade was organized by rulers of England, France, and Germany. This crusade is known as "Crusade of the Kings". Richard I of England aka lionheart and Saladen sign a trace to end the third crusade. Christians pilgrims are free to travel to Jerusalem. The third Crusade is a failure because the Muslims still control Jerusalem.
The fourth crusade was a failure for the Pope who launched it. The Crusaders attacked Constantinople for three days they smashed Christians icons, stole relics and attacked women. The Pope wrote that the crusaders who "should have used their swords against the infidels have bathed those swords in the blood of Christians," the Byzantines never forgave Catholic Christians though.
The Crusades brought Western Europeans into contact with Byzantines and Muslims, also W. Europeans gained new knowledge such as domes, mosaics, build better ships, make more accurate maps, use of a compass to tell direction. Also the wealthy W. Europeans began to want Eastern goods like spices, sugar, silk and lemons. Although Crusades weakened feudilism, the nobles who joined the crusades sold their lands and freed their serfs which reduced the nobles powers.
