- An American guy and a girl called Jig waited for a train to Madrid at a train station in northern Spain near the Ebro River. They brought two beers as they sit at the station, and the girl looks out the window at a line of distant hills.
- CLIMAX
- Jig describes the hills to white elephants. The guy replied immediately that he has never seen one. Jig responds, "You wouldn't have," although he could have seen one. There is pressure as they discuss a operation that the guy is attempting to convince Jig about. The operation is about Jig having an abortion.
- FALLING ACTION
- Jig is concerned of what will happen after the operation. They'll be happy again, according to the man, and everything will return to normal. Jig worries if it will restore the man's feelings for her. He believes it is the best course of action, but she is not required to do so if she does not choose to.
- DENOUEMENT
- Jig has stated that she will proceed with the operation. She appears to want to keep him happy, but he does not want her to do so. Jig informs the man that they might have had everything, but they no longer do. Something will be stolen from.
- The man assures her once again that he's willing to do it if it means anything to her. Jig wonders whether it has any importance for him. He claims it does, and he desires just her. She warns him to shut up and threatens to shout if he doesn't.
- The train is due in 5 minutes, so the man moves the baggage to the opposite tracks. He returns to Jig after having a drink at the bar. She smiled at him, and when he asks whether she's feeling better, she says there's nothing wrong with her; she's fine.
