Storyboard Text

  • Irony
  • The House as a Symbol and Foreshadowing
  • Personification
  • "Sinking and sickening, dark and dreary." This quote shows that the family is breaking into pieces.
  • Alliteration
  • There is plenty of evidence in the text that had to do with the house falling apart. Based on the house's about to fall apart aspect you can use it as a foreshadowing for the Usher siblings. "A barely perceptible fissure, which, extending from the roof of the building in front, made its way down the wall in a zigzag direction, until it became lost in the sullen waters of the tarn"
  • Suspense
  • In this story Edgar Allen Poe gave personification to the windows. It made the House of Usher a powerful and evil presence. In the first paragraph of the story, the narrator describes the house as having “vacant eye-like windows”.
  • Imagery
  • 'An iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart." (Line 19). The weather overall has something to do with the story. Almost as if it were mirroring the characters emotions.
  • "We buried her alive" "Nervous, agitation and paranoia" Both of these quoted demonstrate the suspense in the story and gives the story a dark tone
  • These are examples of imagery "a cadaverous complexion", "The ghastly palor of the skin" These expressions give you the idea that they look like death (very pale).
