Storyboard Text

  • When Montag doesn't feel well he tells Mildred and she doesn't belive him, saying "You're not sick" (48). When Montag vomits on the rug she doesn't think to ask him if he is ok, she only brings up the fact that she is glad the rug is washable. Montag also tells her about the woman that he had to burn to death, She didn't even feel remorse. Mildred wasn't sympathetic at all for Montag and what he had to go though. Mildred only said, "She's nothing to me" (48). When Montag first brought up the fact that he had to burn the old woman, Mildred didn't even find anything strange about that. She didn't even talk more about it until Montag continues to talk about it.
  • Emotionless
  • She is addicted to watching the parlor.
  • Not only is she addicted to watching the parlor, the parlor represents the discontent that she has with the world. She uses that parlor as an escape from any problem that she has in her real life.
  • Addictive Behavior
  • Montag is trying to share the fact that he has books and wants to read them, but Mildred initially doesn't want to hear him. Montag puts trust in Mildred that she later breaks.
  • "I'm tired of listening to this junk," said Mildred, turning from to to the announcer again (62).
  • Mildred's true intentions are to ignore everything that bothers her and distract herself with mindless entertainment.
  • Entitled
  • Mildred doesn't bother to help Montag, she only cares about herself.
  • When Mildred runs past Montag as their house burns he describes by saying she has a stiff body, "her face floured with power, her mouth gone, without lipstick"(108).
  • Selfish
  • In what could be considered the climax of the book, Mildred just walks out on Montag making him feel alone and miserable. If she stayed and helped him, Montag might not have killed all the firemen.
  • I felt compelled and drawn to this character because when I read the book I didn't fully understand her and her motivations. I didn't understand why she did the things she did. After re-reading I understand her importance in the book. She is there to show how everyone else in the world is supposed to act. She is the middle ground between how Montag and Beatty. I also realized that she is the exact opposite of Clarisse. Clarisse is very curious and wants to know as much as possible. Mildred doesn't care about people and she only want to know as little as possible. As long as she is living she doesn't mind not knowing the full truth. There are some times where Mildred that I agree with how Mildred lives her life. When I am annoyed or stressed I find it helpful to ignore what is going on and just mindlessly watch TV. It can help clear my mind and make me focus later on. It is ok to sometimes turn off your brain, but in the case of Mildred, she always has her brain shut off.
  • Mildred can shed light on people in society today because if people realize that they are living their lives like Mildred they would want to change. There are plenty of people in this day and age that try and ignore the bad things that are going on in the world by distracting themselves with the news or social media. If people just realized that how they act makes them seem like they don't care about the world then they might want to change. During the election I personally know someone who didn't want to listen to all the news and controversies that were going on, so they shut themselves off from all the bad news and only watch comedy TV shows to destract their mind. Even though it may seem hard to watch bad news all the time, one of the only ways to learn is if from knowing what people with the opposite opinion of you think like. It is good to listen to people that think different from you so can know where they are coming from and what they belive. Mildred is a good representation of this problem because she doesn't want to change how she thinks or what she believes in. This causes her to not learn anything unlike Montag who completely change his ideals and his thought process.
