As a child, the narrator was very fond of animals. His parents provided him with many and he cared for them all. When he married, his wife shared the same interest in animals and they had lots of different pets too.
The narrator soon got addicted to alcohol and it controlled his actions. One night when he came home, his cat, Pluto, was ignoring him. He decided to take out a knife and carve out his eye.
Soon enough, Pluto's eye healed and he was all better. He still avoided the narrator, and the narrator came to a decision to hang the cat to put him out of his misery.
The night of which the narrator hung the cat, his house caught up in flames and he and his wife lost everything they had. Only one wall was left standing, a wall with an almost bas relief of Pluto hanging.
While at a bar one night, the narrator saw a cat that looked similar to Pluto, except for the white mark on his stomach. The cat followed him home, so he kept it. He soon began to hate the cat, and the creature's white marking turned into the shape of the gallows.
One day, the narrator and his wife were walking down the cellar stairs. The cat was walking in between his legs, as if to trip him.He lifted an axe to the cat's head, but his wife stopped him from doing so. In his rage he lifted the axe to her head and killed her. He hid her in the walls, and a few days later the police came to investigate. The cat had been missing for a few days then, and when the narrator tapped on the wall he his his wife in as the police were there, the cat screamed from inside of the wall. The cat was eating the wife's remains and the narrator was arrested for murder.
