Storyboard Text

  • Hello, I am Bennie Carson.
  • Michigan
  • Welcome to Detroit! My name is Sonya Carson.
  • Hi, my name is Curtis Carson.
  • Welcome everyone!
  •
  •
  • What books should I choose this week?
  • Wow! This is so interesting!
  • Once upon a time, there was a young 11-year-old boy called Benjamin Solomon Carson who lived in the backstreets of Detroit, Michigan. He was raised by a single mother named Sonya Carson, and he had only one older brother named Curtis. Benjamin was raised amongst a lot of poverty and racism. His grades were very poor, and he had a very bad temper.
  • “You weren’t born to be a failure, Bennie. You can do it!” (Carson, 20)
  • Furthermore, he dreamt of becoming a doctor one day, and he knew he had to work hard to become a doctor. Even though Sonya Carson only got a third-grade education, she was the ray of sunshine and beam of light for the Carson family. She had a lot of faith in her sons, and she began to help them expand their imaginations, become more intelligent and she taught them to believe in themselves.
  • Firstly, she forced her sons to learn their multiplication times tables and restricted them to only watching television to no more than two shows per week. Instead, she mandated her sons to read one book per week and then write a report on the book they each read.
  • BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
  • She often stated to Ben “You weren’t born to be a failure, Bennie. You can do it!” (Carson, 20) Using his mom’s motivation and encouraging words, Benjamin went from being the lowest academically in his class to the top. As the years rolled on, Ben persevered and worked hard to get a scholarship to go to Yale University.
  • After studying neurosurgery for many years, Ben Carson finally got accepted at a well-known hospital located in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S called Johns Hopkins. He was a very talented neurosurgeon, as he performed very challenging and risky surgeries making him famous. Today, Dr. Ben Carson is a retired neurosurgeon, author, and politician.
  • THE END! The moral of the story is anybody no matter what colour, age, gender, or how underprivileged you may be, you can create success! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
