- Dawn Rochelle was 13 when the doctors told her she had cancer.

- She was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia – One of the most common forms of cancer among kids.
- Her roommate in the hospital is named Sandy Chandler, who is the exact same age, and had been recently diagnosed with the same cancer.

- Dawn and Sandy both decide to go to Cancer Camp over the summer.

- Shortly after camp, Dawn hears Sandy has got her cancer back. She is filled with dismay and sympathy. Sandy dies!

- Dawn recieves a chest full of Sandy's belongings. The chest helps Dawn remember all the memories with her friend, and she will cherish them forever.
