When the war started the US only had less then 7,000 troops and states would only have about 50,000 to 100,000 milita. To make matters worse they were poorly trained. It was a stuggle for the US and another thing that made matter even worse is that the british had control of the Lake Erie which made it imposible for Americans to win.
American and British leaders decided to sign a peace agreement on December 24, 1814, in Ghent, Belgium. They stopped because the British new they would not gain alot if they kept attacking the USA. The treaty did not change anything because of Naploen''s downfalll there was no need to worry about neutral rights because it was no longer an issue.
After the convention broke up, word cameof Jackson’s spectacular victory at NewOrleans, followed by news of the peace treaty this made people more proud to be American. This grouth of Nationism felt like a renewed sense of patriotism and a strong national identity for Americans.
