  • A Path Towards Home
  • And how exactly will it help us?
  • But what IS it?
  • It's a present from mom. It's called a compass, and we'll also need an astrolabe.
  • Astronomy
  • Woah...So many stars! I never realized they were so beautiful!
  • Go on, Kate. You can drive the ship. We know nothing about astronomy so you need to teach us.
  • Star Gazing
  • Woah...
  • Kate wasn't allowed to drive the ship, but she was already an expert at astronomy. When her mother was still alive, she taught Kate about the planets and stars, and about how to use the tools to navigate a ship. It seemed like Kate could finally help her father in some way too.
  • A compass is used for navigation and tells us which direction we're going. The astrolabe can tell us where we are, using astronomy.
  • Thanks to Kate who wanted to become an astronomer, the family made it back to their seas. Kate taught her dad and her brother everything she knew about astronomy and navigation. The family created more accurate maps by using the two tools Kate introduced them to and sold them to other pirates and sailors who wanted correct maps.
  • Okay dad. So this is a compass. It was created by Muslims like us some time ago, so they could navigate places easier.
  • For years and years, Kate pointed out the different constellations, planets, and stars to Jack, who was eager to learn it all. Never again did that ship get lost with Kate's guidance.
  • You see on the right the crescent moon, then Mars in the middle, surrounded by stars. Oh! On the left, there's a shooting star!
