- Madame Loisel dressed plainly because she could not afford fine clothes, but was as unhappy as a woman who has come down in the world; for women have no family rank or social class.With them, beauty, grace, and charm take the place of birth and breeding.
- Her husband, Monsieur Loisel, got her an invitation to a party. She didn't have anything nice to wear to the party so she didn't want to go. That made her husband upset.
- Monsieur Loisel went out and bought Madame Loisel a dress for the party. Then he went out and got a necklace from Madame Forestier so she could look the best in the whole party.
- When Madame Loisel got back from the party, she realized that she didn't have Madame Forestiers necklace with her. She was really scared since she lost a necklace worth 500 francs.
- Madame Loisel and her husband began working to get money to pay for a new necklace. They worked for 10 years to make up money for the lost necklace.
- When Madame Loisel saw Madame Forestier after she gave the new necklace back, she told her that she lost her original necklace and bought a new one for 500 francs. Then Madame Forestier told Madame Loisel that the necklace was fake and it wasn't worth that much money.
