  • Ms.Gupta, what is the point of learning math if we don't use it in life?
  • Oh Alisha ! But we do use math in so many ways everyday!
  • Why don't you look around for today and tell me the uses of math in our daily life tomorrow?
  • Ok!
  • Like what?
  • If the game costs $27 and I take it as x and my allowance $5 is y then I need (x/y=z, 27/5=5.4) to save up for a little more than 6 weeks to buy the game!
  •
  • That is weird, I just solved my problem using math !
  • Thanks mum. I have 6 friends, so 7 people including me and I take it as x and if each person gets 3 slices thats y and a medium pizza has 8 slices that is z (xy/z=a, 7*3/8= 21/8= 2.65) and so, I need 3 pizzas.
  • Mum, can I call my friends over ?
  • Well done, you just used maths !!
  • Sure, but since I am busy, you can order pizza.
  • One day during math class, when everyone was doing their classwork, Alisha asked Ms.Gupta how math was used in their Daily Life. Ms.Gupta replied saying that Math was used in many ways in our everyday life and told her to observe the ways in which it was used and tell her the next day. Alisha agreed.
  • So now I use (x/y)*a/b=c, where x=120 mins, y=20 mins, a= 30 mins and b=60 mins. So, (120/20)*30/60=3 hoursI need to study for 3 hours.
  • But, you need to study or exercise for 30 mins for 20 mins of game time.
  • That is correct!
  • When she gets home, she realises that the new Odessey video game part has been released, but it costs 27 dollars. She thinks to herself, unknowingly using math to solve her problem.
  • So, (1*7)/(.5*7)= 7/3.5, So, now I need 7 cups of water and 3.5 cups of mix !!
  • If the instruction says to use 1 cup of water for .5 cups of mix, and I have six friends, so 7 people, I have to use the formula x/y and multiply both by 7
  • Later in the afternoon, she asked hermother if she could invite her friends over for dinner. Her mother agreed but said that she could not make the food as she was busy and told Alishah that she could order pizza. Alishah knew that 6 of her friends were coming over and used maths once again to calculate the number of pizzas required.
  • Miss was right! We do use maths so many times in our every lives !
  • But, her mother told Alisha that she had to read or exercise for 30 minutes for every 20 minutes of game time with her friends. Alisha again calculates the amount of time she would have to read or exercise to play a game for 2 hours.
  • Afterwards, when all her friends came over, Alishah decided to bake mini cakes using the mix that she had bought at the store. Again, she used math to solve her problem.
  • That night, while sleeping, Alishah taught about what her teacher told her in class.
