  • The Korean War (1950-1953) began when the North Korean Communist army crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded non-Communist South Korea. As Kim Il-sung's North Korean army, armed with Soviet tanks, quickly overran South Korea, the United States came to South Korea's aid.
  • Berlin Wall
  • The competition between the United States and Russia to get to space first. Russia launched the first satellite (Sputnik). However, the United States made it to the moon first in 1969.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis
  • The plan was to overthrow Fidel Castro and his revolution. Instead, it turned into a humiliating defeat which pushed Cuba firmly into the arms of the Soviet Union and has soured US-Cuban relations to this day. The Bay of Pigs is a large isolated inlet on Cuba's southern coast.
  • Vietnam War
  • During the early years of the Cold War, West Berlinwas a geographical loophole through which thousands of East Germans fled to the democratic West. In response, the Communist East German authorities built a wall that totally encircled WestBerlin. It was thrown up overnight, on 13 August 1961.
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 was a direct and dangerous confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War and was the moment when the two superpowers came closest to nuclear conflict.
  • First Indochina War (1946–1954) between France, which claimed Vietnam as a colony, and the communist forces then known as Viet Minh. In 1973 a “third” Vietnam war began—a continuation, actually—between North and SouthVietnam but without significant U.S. involvement.
