- I have been waiting to go on this service trip for months, but now I am unsure if I can make my time here worth it
- It only now occurred to me that I spoke little to no Spanish compared to the local people and I would have trouble communicating with them
- Bienvenido!

- I attempted to communicate with the locals, but failed miserably
- ???
- What do you like to do for fun?
- I envied my peers who were easily able to connect with the kids we were serving
- I laid on bed for nearly an hour that night, thinking long and hard of any way I could break the language barrier dividing me from the kids in my village… nothing
- Perro Pateado!
- Fútbol?
- When I missed the ball, the kids started kicking me!
- Perro pateado means they kick you when you miss the ball!
- I was finally connecting with the kids, I had accomplished my goal of overcoming the language and social barrier
- I left Mexicali overjoyed, excited to return next year
